Making Better Choices
Our mind is a powerful tool that is only limited by our belief. Over the past 20 years of working with the mind, I have found that there are a couple secrets that will help you make better choices. The first secret is that no matter what you believe, your mind will in time make sure you are right. If you think you can not do something, you will not be able to do it. How many times have you seen people start to succeed, and later fail because they stopped, or self-sabotaged their success? I have found that if you think you are going to fail, most of the time you will. The first secret to making better choices is believing that you will do something and not just try to do it. If you say you are going to try to do something then you are actually telling yourself that there is a possibility of failure. Get rid of try from your vocabulary, and make a decision to do it or not instead.

Not Your Average Zucchini
I was recently at a barbeque where I sampled the best zucchini I’ve ever had. This Italian style dish was colorful, zesty and topped with cheese. To put it simply, “What’s not to love?” To start off, peel yellow or green (or both) zucchini, and slice. Then saute them in a frying pan with 1 tbsp. of olive oil and 1 tbsp. minced garlic until soft. Add one can of Italian style tomatoes and heat throughout. Top with a handful of cheddar cheese and put the entire frying pan in the oven (about 350 degrees) and cook until the cheese is melted. Finally, serve with a lean protein like pork tenderloin or grilled fish and you have a complete meal! Enjoy!

How Can I Improve My Family’s Health?
When you’re a parent, it can be a challenge to live a fit lifestyle with a family to feed. Time is always an issue and how often do your kids really jump at the chance to try a new and healthy dish? Many of our nutrition experts have children in their lives and wanted to shed light on how to more easily transition your family to live a healthier lifestyle. Read on to learn more...
It all starts with breakfast. By now you know that eating a balanced meal one hour within waking helps kick-start your metabolism and prevents mid-day sugar cravings. Also, did you know that the right breakfast can actually aid in keeping your child focused during a long school day? Help your child stay alert with a power packed meal in the morning, like easy-to-make protein pancakes, yogurt parfaits, or protein shakes. All of these recipes can be found in the Recipe Collection located in our online nutrition software. You can even make egg beaters in bulk to last a few days (just store them in the fridge in an airtight container then heat them in the microwave) and serve with whole grain toast. Taking five minutes to prepare a balanced meal in the morning helps the whole family get off on the right foot.
Pack the right snacks. Now more than ever, kids are relying on vending machines in school for a quick pick-me-up snack. Vending machine snacks like candy bars and crackers lack the protein we need for good health and are loaded with sodium, sugar and saturated fat. Try sending them to school with balanced snacks like string cheese and fruit, single serving cottage cheese and fruit packs, or a natural protein bar (like Greens Plus or the Natural Bar) so your kids have a healthy option to munch on.
Prepare in Bulk. Making balanced dinners after a long day at work or at home is easy if you’re prepared. Try setting aside an hour a week for bulk cooking. Grilled chicken breasts or frozen peeled shrimp can easily top a salad or whole grain pizza. They can also be sautéed with veggies and rice for a quick meal. Something else that helps is to have healthy starches pre-made and on hand like whole grain rice for quick stir-fries and whole wheat pasta to top with marinara, chicken and parmesan cheese. In addition, frozen veggies take 5 minutes to prepare and can be tossed into any dish.

You Asked | We Answered
Q:I know I’m supposed to eat one hour before going to sleep. But I’m not very hungry because I just ate dinner 3 hours ago. What should I do?
A:It’s important to feed your body prior to sleep to keep your blood sugar stable. If you’re not hungry, try eating a mini meal. Just take any meal in your plan and cut each ingredient in the meal in ½ or even in 1/3, to keep the ratios of protein, carbohydrate and fat at the correct balance. It can be as simple as having a few bites of leftovers from dinner or even a bite of a protein bar.
